Hudnut Is “Golden” For Covenant In Win
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant players, coaches, and supporters had all seen this before this year. Score tied at 0-0 going into overtime periods and the Scots not getting too many opportunities to score.
But, unlike the other four overtime matches Covenant has played, this time the Scots came through. Matt Hudnut’s "golden goal" came from about 35 yards out in the 95th minute and propelled Covenant to a 1-0 win over Union University on Homecoming Saturday night.
Covenant improves to 3-6-2 for the season, while Union drops to 4-6 on the year.
Hudnut’s goal came just one minute after Covenant had a goal taken away due to a Scots player being offside. As the ball came back to the offensive side for Covenant, Hudnut decided to take a shot at the net from deep and was rewarded when the ball slipped past Union keeper James Landham, his first goal of the season, sending players and the capacity crowd at Scotland Yard into a frenzy.
The Scots had several chances early in the match as they took five shots within the first 20 minutes of action, but Landham saved three of those shots to keep the match scoreless. Covenant keeper John Eger matched Landham as he was able to save three Bulldogs shots in the first 45 minutes.
Both teams had just a few chances in the second period, but again neither team would capitalize. Headers from Roy Anderson, Chris Pifer, and Hudnut all were saved by Landham. Union’s best chance to score came late in the 84th minute when Alysson Mohl had a shot at the net, but Eger was there to collect the save.
Covenant outshot the Bulldogs 15-13 on the night, with a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Both Scots keeper Eger and Union keeper Landham had 6 saves. The Scots took 5 corner kicks as opposed to just 1 for the visitors.
Covenant will hit the road for their next match when they take on Piedmont College on October 12 at 7:00 p.m. in Demorest, GA. The Scots will return home on October 25 against Reinhardt University.
