Huskers Drop Heartbreaker in Denver
Two goals from the Denver Pioneers in the final 16 minutes of the game, including the game winner from Kristen Hamilton with 20 seconds left, dropped the Nebraska soccer team to 0-2-1 on the season following a 3-2 loss on Thursday night at CIBER Field.
The loss overshadowed a solid performance from Morgan Marlborough, as the junior scored the 40th and 41st goals of her NU career after being held without a goal through the first two games of the season. The multi-goal game was the 11th of Marlborough's career, which gave her sole possession of the No. 4 spot on NU's career multi-goal chart. The Lee's Summit, Mo., native also moved into a tie with two-time All-American Brittany Timko for fourth on NU's career goals chart.
For the third straight game the Huskers let the opposition strike first, as the Pioneers' Kaitlin Bast put in a header from Cassidy Larson at the 8:56 mark to score her first goal of the season. Marlborough and the Huskers would not stay down long as the junior would strike from 20 yards out at 15:15 to tie the game at 1-1. The Pioneers were able to get off four more shots on goal in the half, but NU goalie Emma Stevens stopped each attempt and the two teams headed to the intermission tied at 1-1.
Following a short lightning delay to begin the second half, the Huskers got on the offensive with two quick shots from Marlborough and Ari Romero. Marlborough kept firing and at 50:28 she connected from 18 yards out to give the Huskers their first lead of the season at 2-1.
Nebraska kept up the offensive attack, but was routinely shutdown by the DU's Maria Khan. The tough defense allowed the Pioneers to stay close and they eventually tied the game when Anna Willis fed Bast a wide-open goal at 74:52 from five yards out after Willis drew Stevens way from the net.
The Huskers looked like they'd be heading to overtime for the second straight game, but Hamilton put the game away in regulation. With under 30 seconds left in the game, Sam Harder put a free kick in the box that was first deflected by Nicholette DiGiacomo before Hamilton put in the game winner.
