Huskies and Tigers fight to 2-2 draw
TOWSON, Md. – The Northeastern men's soccer team (11-1-3, 6-0-2 CAA) extended streak to 11 games on Wednesday with a 2-2 draw at Towson (4-9-2, 2-5-2) in a back-and-forth battle at the Tiger Soccer Complex. Don Anding scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season early in the match while Simon Cox netted his fourth of the season to knot the score at two midway through the second half.
With the tie, the Huskies drop into second place in the CAA standings with 20 points and two league games to play. Drexel currently sits in first place with 22 points following a 2-1 victory at Hofstra Wednesday night; the Dragons have one league game remaining.
NU held a heavy statistical advantage in the match, outshooting Towson 18-9 (11-2 shots on goal) and generating seven corners to the Tigers' three. Towson goalkeeper Felix Petermann made nine saves in the game to keep the Tigers alive.
The Huskies wasted no time in bolting out to a 1-0 lead as Anding netted his 11th goal of the season in the 11th minute. After taking a feed from Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave, Anding went in one-on-one with Petermann before blasting a shot into the upper left corner.
Towson would level the match at one aside in the 27th minute of play as Olakunie Banjo buried his fourth goal of the year when he collected a loose ball and fired a shot past NU goalkeeper Oliver Blum and into the right side of the net for the score.
Following the goal, NU began to apply heavy pressure on the Tiger defense as Dante Marini hammered a shot on goal in the 37th minute that was saved by Petermann before Anding hit the crossbar with a rebound bid seconds later.
Daniel Grundel and the Tigers came out firing in the second half, taking a 2-1 lead less than 15 minutes into the frame. After Towson earned their second corner opportunity of the match, Enrico Skrypzak sent the ball into the box, where Grundel leaped to bury a header past Blum for his first goal of the season.
The lead would be short lived, however as Cox scored his fourth goal of the season just 3:23 after the Grundel tally. Marini was credited with his third assist of the season on the goal. NU would pepper Petermann with 10 second half shots, including Anding's second crossbar hit of the match in the 77th minute to send NU into overtime for the seventh time this season.
The Huskies had their chances in extra time as NU earned back-to-back corner chances in the final five minutes of double overtime, but could not convert. Northeastern outshot Towson 2-1 in the overtime periods.
Northeastern will be back in action on Saturday night as the Huskies host George Mason on Senior Day at Parsons Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
