Huskies outshoot UNCW, but drop 2-0 decision
Box Score
BROOKLINE, Mass.—The Northeastern University men's soccer team (5-9-0, 2-2-0 CAA) outshot visiting UNCW on Saturday night but could not solve Seahawks' keeper Sam Williams in a 2-0 loss at Parsons Field in Brookline.
The Huskies registered 11 shots to UNCW's eight, but a free kick by Mateo Cardona at the 62-minute mark found the top right corner to give the Seahawks (10-3-2, 3-2-1 CAA) all the offense they would need. Cardona rifled home a rebound just over one minute later to set the final tally.
Northeastern controlled play for much of the first half, outshooting the Seahawks, 5-1 through the first 45 minutes. The two teams combined for just two shots on goal in a defensive first stanza.
The Huskies registered the game's first scoring opportunity just six minutes into the action when Brad Fountain sent a free kick to the lower left corner. UNCW's Williams cradled the kick, though, to end NU's scoring bid.
The skies opened on Parsons Field at the 33-minute mark, and the squads played in a steady rain for the remainder of the first half, before conditions cleared at halftime.
Jonathan Thuresson, NU's starting goal keeper, left the game at the 21-minute mark and gave way to Dylan Faber, who saw action for the second consecutive game and the fourth time in six games. Faber finished the game with four saves.
Northeastern threatened again near the 26-minute mark. The Huskies' Marc Greenblatt sent a cross from the right side that was deflected by the Seahawks' keeper. NU's Nick Goo collected the deflection and fired a shot from the top of the box that missed just wide.
Colin Bonner recorded UNCW's best scoring chance of the half on a header at the 30-minute mark. Faber, though, made the save for the Huskies to keep the squads deadlocked at 0-0. The Seahawks again threatened 10 minutes later, but Faber came away from the goal to make an aggressive play on a ball in the box to send the action the other way.
UNCW opened the second half as the aggressor, but it was the Huskies who had the first scoring opportunities.
NU's Frantzdy Pierrot carried the ball down the left side and sent a pass to Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave in front of the goal. The Seahawks' Williams made a diving play to deflect the pass and end the NU threat. Moments later, at the 61-minute mark, NU again threatened when Daniel Arvidsson sent a free kick to Pierrot, whose header missed just wide. Pierrot recorded a game-high five shots on the night.
As play transitioned to the other end of the field, a yellow card issued to NU's Daniel Korman gave UNCW a free kick. That's when Cardona broke through for the Seahawks. The senior from Colombia sent the free kick into the top right corner of the goal for a 1-0 Seahawks' lead at the 62-minute mark.
Just more than 60 seconds later, Cardona registered his second goal of the evening and fourth of the season. UNCW's Jamie Dell fired a shot from the right side. Faber made a diving save, but the ball caromed to Cardona, who buried the rebound just under the crossbar.
The Huskies continued to fight, and threatened to cut the lead on three separate occasions. The first two scoring bids came off the foot of Fountain. At the 80-minute mark, the freshman fired a rocket off a free kick that caromed off the right post. Four minutes later, again off a free kick, he sent a ball that went just slightly over the crossbar. Two minutes later, at the 86-minute mark, Fountain fired a pass to Harry Swartz, who in turn fed Pierrot, whose scoring bid missed just left of the net.
The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday when Northeastern travels to Delaware for a CAA match-up at 3 p.m.
