Huskies top Loyola, 3-0; Leone earns 100th career win
The Northeastern women's soccer team topped Loyola (Md.), 3-0, in its home opener Friday evening at Parsons Field, moving to 2-1-0 on the season. The win gives Head Coach Tracey Leone 100 career coaching victories.
In its first-ever match against the Greyhounds, the Huskies played stout defense all game, shutting out the Greyhounds and giving up only eight shots.
Forward Veronica Napoli opened up the scoring with a volley over the Loyola goalkeeper on a feed from Hanna Terry in the 24th minute. Napoli’s goal was her first of the season. Napoli, the CAA preseason Player of the Year, now has 27 career goals, three behind the program’s all-time record, and 65 career points, just eight off the program record.
Northeastern added to its lead in the 48th minute when Greta Samuelsdottir put home a shot off a feed from Maria Lanyi for her first goal of the year. Lanyi’s assist was her first point in her collegiate career.
Maintaining pressure throughout the second half, the Huskies drew a yellow card and a penalty kick on a rush in the 77th minute, forcing Loyola goalkeeper Didi Haracic to attempt a slide tackle in the box. Senior Kirby Anderson buried the penalty kick to put the Huskies up by three.
The Huskies fired several shots in the final minute of play. Sophomore midfielder Hannah O’Donnell hit the crossbar on a shot from several yards outside the penalty area.
The Huskies outshot Loyola, 20-8. Freshman goalkeeper Paige Burnett recorded her first collegiate shutout.
Head Coach Tracey Leone is now 11-9-1 at Northeastern. Leone began her coaching career at Clemson in 1994. In six seasons at Clemson she went 89-39-4, advancing to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments.
