Indiana Suffers 2-1 Loss to No. 12 Marquette

Orianica Velasquez gave IU a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the match

 

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana took a 1-0 lead just 37 seconds into the match on Orianica Velasquez’s fifth goal of the season, but No. 12 Marquette (7-1) tied the game seven minutes later and then scored the game-winner in the 63^rd minute to hand the Hoosiers a 2-1 loss at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

 

“I’m very, very proud of the team,” Indiana head coach Mick Lyon said. “We played a tremendous game and we had Marquette confused, on their heels and unsettled the whole game. It was a great game to be at and coach in. We had a couple of very good chances in close but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.”

 

Indiana (4-3-1) took the lead just 37 seconds after the kickoff when the Marquette defenders failed to clear the ball and Carly Samp found the ball at her feet just outside the of the box. She dribbled towards the middle and then sent a through ball that Velasquez won and tapped it past the keeper and into the left side of the goal. It is her team-leading fifth goal of this season and the 17^th of her career. For Samp, it was her first assist of the season and 12^th of her career.

 

Of the 17 goals scored by Indiana this season, 11 have come in the first half.

 

Seven minutes later, it would be Marquette that would capitalize on a defensive miscue by the Hoosiers to tie the game at 1-1, with Meagan Kelly scoring her eighth goal of the season.

 

In the 54^th minute, Kate McCusker found some space behind the MU defense inside the box on the left side but her shot hit the post and came out on the right side of the box. Rebecca Candler was waiting there but her shot attempt was blocked by a Marquette defender and rolled onto the waiting foot of Lisa Nouanesengsy. The sophomore attempted to drive a low shot into the lower left corner but MU goalkeeper Natalie Kulla was able to make the save while on the ground to keep IU off the scoreboard.

 

Nearly 10 minutes later, Taylor Madigan drove home a cross to the back post to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 lead.

 

From there, it was up to Indiana to mount another offensive surge at the Marquette goal and they responded. Samp served a cross through the middle of the box to the back post but it was just out of the reach of Monica Melink. A few minutes later, Samp put Velaquez in on goal behind the Marquette defense but Velasquez’s shot sailed wide left. Then with about 30 seconds left in the match, Samp had a ball ricochet to her foot at the top of the box and her drive was blocked at the last second by a defender.

 

“If we play at this level and with this kind of team spirit, we will have a tremendous Big Ten season,” Lyon said about his team’s effort on Sunday.

 

Marquette finished with 18 shots in the contest to 13 for the Hoosiers while IU was able to draw five corners and only gave up four to the Golden Eagles.

 

IU goalkeeper Lindsay Campbell made seven saves in the game.

 

The Hoosiers will open Big Ten play next Sunday (Sept. 18) against Michigan at Armstrong Stadium. The game will start at 12:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
