Iona Defends Home Field Against SFC
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College men's soccer program defended home field on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 3-1 win over defending Northeast Conference champions, St. Francis Brooklyn.
Senior Killian Colombie matched his goal total from last season with two tallies against the Terriers. His first gave the Maroon & Gold an early edge in the 3' off of a free kick delivered to the back post by senior Samuel Saenz. The Paris, France native gave the Gaels their third count, a key insurance goal, in the 85' with sophomore Najim Romero sliding across an assist deep into the box. Colombie now has 10 goals in his Iona career.
Senior Rory Head netted the game-winning goal in the 38' off a free kick delivered by Saenz. It was his first goal while a member of the Maroon & Gold. Saenz's two assists on Saturday were also his first two of his career.
St. Francis Brooklyn tied the game in the 28' with a score by Anthony Gimenes. It came just a minutes after Marco Torriani and Sami Gilguem had two near-sighted shots blocked by the Gael defense. The momentum of the game with in St. Francis's favor over the end of the first half and into the second. It had six straight shots including two that were blocked and one that had to be saved by junior Juan Alcantara. He ended the game with four saves for Iona.
The Terriers outshot Iona 17-14 in the game. They spread the wealth with eight different players recording shots. Colombie had seven of Iona's shot. Head had a pair, both in the first half, and Romero recorded two in the second half. Seniors Humbert Ferrer, Sebastian Gordillo and Saenz each had one.
There were 34 combined fouls in the game and five yellow cards given. Iona's senior Anthony Gomez, Head and sophomore Lenworth Lopez were each issued one.
St. Francis Brooklyn is the second NEC opponent of four for the Maroon & Gold this season. Iona takes a break from those schools with a trip to Durham, NH on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Iona kicks-off against New Hampshire at 7 PM at Bremner.
