Iona Loses in Overtime at Wagner
STATEN ISLAND, NY – The Wagner Seahawks downed the Iona College women's soccer team in overtime, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon. Despite go-ahead goals from Amber Crispin and Sofia Giamanco on two separate occasions, the Gaels could not close out the match today at Hameline Field.
GAME SUMMARY
After a slow, opening 20 minutes, the match saw some early scoring. Iona's Amber Crispin scored for the second straight contest, giving the Maroon & Gold a 1-0 lead. Wagner answered back two minutes later, getting the equalizer from Maria Nunez on a free kick.
Wagner tried shots in the 35th and 37th minutes, but both were off-target. Mikayla Fosina tried one for the Maroon & Gold three minutes later, but was stopped by Erin Kelly.
With less than five minutes left in the first half, freshman Sofia Giamancorecovered a loose ball inside the box and buried her shot to give Iona the lead once more. The Gaels would have another chance to extend the lead with a corner kick in the final minutes, but could not muster a goal. The two sides entered halftime with Iona leading 2-1.
Preziosi and Gabby Cipriano each tried shots in the opening 15 minutes for their respective sides; both missed wide of the cage. Mackenzie Meixner and Kiera Haggerty would also try shots, but came up empty.
As the clock ran under the 10-minute mark, the Seahawks lined up for a penalty kick attempt. Annie White took the PK and sent it home to tie the score at 2-2. Wagner managed to tie the match for the second time on the day, sending the game into a first overtime.
Neither side could manage a shot across the opening eight-plus minutes of extra time. The Seahawks lined up for a corner kick with just over a minute remaining; Le'la Allen netted the game-winning goal on a deflection from right in front of the cage, completing the comeback for Wagner.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- Giamanco's goal was the first of her collegiate career. The rookie now has three points on the season.
- Crispin has scored in two consecutive contests and has now moved into a tie for fifth place in program history with her 13th career goal.
- All three of Wagner's goals were unassisted on the afternoon.
- Emma Havrilla faced nine shots in net, making three saves and allowing three goals across 99 minutes.
- Wagner's Nunez and Iona's Crispin were the only players to register more than one shot.
- Allen's game-winning goal came via the only shot and the only corner of the overtime period.

Iona will return to Mazzella Field to host St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday afternoon. Kick-off is scheduled for 3 PM and the match will be broadcasted on Iona Insider.
