Iona Women's Soccer Fights Tie On Senior Day
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College women's soccer team celebrated senior day at Mazzella Field on Wednesday, Oct. 17 and earned a 1-1 draw against the Manhattan Jaspers following the pregame ceremony. Prior to the contest, head coach John Stalzerand Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski honored program seniors Corinne Burns, Mariana Jaramillo Sara Mangialardi and Megan Wood.
GAME SUMMARY
Manhattan had the offense edge throughout the majority of the first half. The Jaspers outshot the Maroon & Gold 8-3. Victoria Reis and Caleigh Farrell had shot attempts in the first 10 minutes. Rookie Emma Havrilla saved Reis's initial attempt and the Farrell hit the right post with a shot from the left side.
Iona's keeper had to make two most saves in the first have against Sydney Harwood and Lindsey Healy.
The most dangerous shots in the first half for Iona came from junior Ciara Guglielmoand freshman Andrea Ferrer in the middle portion of the period. Each had a shot on goal that was saved by Kelly DiGregorio.
The Jaspers broke the scoring ceiling in the 47'. Maddie Barrow assisted on Farrell's first goal of the season by putting header on goal that had to be deflected by Havrilla. The bounce found Farrell on the right side of the cage and she planted it home to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead.
The next 10 minutes was Iona's most sustained offensive timespan of the match. The Gaels had four straight shots, including one by graduate Christine Rebus that was saved, and an in close attempt by Rookie Faith Preziosi that was blocked.
The equalizer came in the 67'. Guglielmo, Iona's assist leader, created space 25 yards out from goal and fed a pass to junior Amber Crispin who was waiting on the right side. She took in the pass from the midfielder, took one dribble to her right, and buried in a line-drive shot from 20 yards out into the left corner.
Manhattan outshot Iona 4-1 in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Havrilla was up to the task for the Maroon & Gold with two saves in the final three minutes.
Iona's hearts skipped a beat in the 86'. It looked like Farrell had scored her second of the game on a creative header, but the official's offside flag was raised and the goal was negated.
Sophomore Katie Benson and freshman Taylor D'Alessandro had Iona's shots on goal in overtime. Farrell had one shot on target in the first extra period.
The Gaels and Jaspers finished the game tied in shots, 18-18. Each team had four corner kick chances.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Havrilla made 10 saves in goal for the Maroon & Gold. It is her second double-digit save effort of the season. She previously had a career-best 11 against Siena on Oct. 6.
- Crispin leads the Gaels with six goals this season. She has a career-best .625 shot on goal percentage this season.
- Burns earned her first start since Sept. 15 against Niagara. Mangialardi started for the first time since Aug. 26 against Binghamton.
- Ferrer finished the game with a game-high and career-best six shots.
- Iona's 18 shots matched a season-high that was set at Canisius (Sept. 19).
UP NEXT
The Gaels wrap up the regular season with two road contests. On Saturday, Oct. 20 the Maroon & Gold travel to Jersey City, NJ to battle against Saint Peter's. The regular-season finale is against Monmouth in West Long Branch, NJ on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
