Iowa State Falls To No. 16 Va Tech, 1-0
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Iowa State soccer team dropped its first match of the 2012 season Sunday with a 1-0 defeat to No. 16 Virginia Tech. The Hokies’ Shannon Mayrose produced the lone goal via a header 25:51 into the match.
Mayrose’s goal was the first tally Iowa State (3-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12 Conference) conceded this season and snaps a four-game shutout streak that dates back to 2011.
The Cyclones attempted to find a late equalizer with three shots in the final nine minutes, but Iowa State was not able to find the back of the net.
The match was the first time Iowa State was held scoreless in eight games. The last time the Cyclones failed to register a goal was Oct. 9, 2011 against Baylor.
Virginia Tech (4-0) held the statistical edge in the defensive battle. The Hokies had a 9-4 shots advantage and fired six corner kicks to the Cyclones’ three.
Iowa State junior goalkeeper Maddie Jobe played the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves. Jobe’s record dropped to 3-1 on the season.
Iowa State opens its home part of the schedule in its next match. The Cyclones face instate rival Iowa in an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be played at the ISU Soccer Complex, located east of the Lied Recreation Center on the Iowa State campus.
