ISU Opens Cyclone Sports Complex With Win
AMES, Iowa – A two-goal night from junior Jennifer Dominguez helped the Iowa State soccer team open the Cyclone Sports Complex with a win. The Cyclones downed TCU 2-0 Friday in a Big 12 Conference match in the debut of the team’s new field.
With her two goals, Dominguez has nine on the season. Dominguez has the most goals in a season since Erica Florez also recorded nine in 1999. The Lubbock, Texas, native currently stands in a tie for fourth in goals scored in a season. Jo Hinks holds the Cyclone record with 18 in 1997.
Dominguez was not the only Cyclone to appear on the final score line multiple times. Senior Megan Longobardi provided the assist for both of Dominguez’s goals. Longobardi’s two-assist night is a career best. Longobardi did more than just provide assists, as she fired a career-high-tying five shots. Dominguez tied Longobardi for the team-high in shots at five.
Iowa State (9-6 overall, 1-3 Big 12) had a decisive edge statistically in the match. The Cyclones outshot TCU 21-7 and held a 9-3 corner kick advantage.
Dominguez created history just 4:30 into the match when she found the back of the net for the first goal in the history of the Cyclone Sports Complex. Dominguez doubled the goal tally 27:52 into the match when she beat TCU (5-7-1 overall, 0-3 Big 12) goalkeeper Vittoria Arnold with a low shot to the corner. The goal was the result of a nice buildup and a superb penetrating pass from Longobardi.
The Cyclones split time in goal between sophomore Andrea Swanson and junior Maddie Jobe. Swanson played the first 45 minutes and notched one save. Jobe was in net for the second half and had three saves in 45 minutes.
With their nine wins, the Cyclones tied for the most in a campaign since an 11-win season in 2005. Iowa State also notched nine wins last year.
The Cyclones’ 31 goals this season is the highest mark since a 31-goal output in 2005.
The Cyclones continue their home stand Sunday when West Virginia comes to the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Big 12 match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT
