It's Raining Goals
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt ended its opening weekend with a 4-0 win over Evansville on a rainy Sunday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex.
The 17th-ranked Commodores (2-0) remain unbeaten in 15 straight games at home dating to 2017. The Dores enjoyed a 71% possession advantage and also a 27-1 shots advantage against the Purple Aces.
Vanderbilt got on the board toward the end of the first half off the right foot of Peyton Cutshall. Myra Konte and Grace Jackson set her up with a combination pass, and Cutshall fired a shot from over 20 yards out that slipped past the outstretched goalkeeper.
Cutshall set up the opportunity for the Dores’ second goal. Three minutes into the second half, she fired a shot from 20 yards away and nailed the crossbar. Alex Kerr collected the rebound and put it away for her second goal in as many games.
Vanderbilt scored its third goal in the 81st minute. Leila Azari passed a throw-in to Maddie Elwell who crossed it into the box. Haley Hopkins sent a header right at the edge of the six-yard box into the center of the net.
Hopkins managed to strike again for her second straight and sixth-career multi-goal game. Madiya Harriott fired a shot from outside the 18-yard box, which was deflected toward the far-right corner of the six-yard box.
Hopkins corralled the rebound and sent a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net for Vanderbilt’s fourth goal.
Hopkins has four goals in 2019 with three coming off headers. She has also scored in four straight games dating to 2018.
Elwell continues to lead the nation in assists after notching her fourth against Evansville. She has matched last season’s total in just two games.
Vanderbilt posted its second straight shutout on the season and has only allowed four shots in two games.
The Commodores hit the West Coast next weekend to continue the season where they will face UC Irvine on Friday at 5 p.m. CT and Pepperdine on Sunday at 11 a.m.
