IU Falls at No. 12 Michigan, 1-0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Indiana women’s soccer team (10-4-1, 3-4 Big Ten) battled No. 12 Michigan (11-2-1, 5-1-1 Big Ten) from the start but were unable to find the back of the net and suffered a 1-0 loss to the Wolverines. Shannon Flower made five saves in goal for Indiana.
“I’m happy with the entire team effort tonight,” Indiana head coach Amy Berbary said. “For the first time this season, I thought we played consistently for 90 minutes. We played one of the best teams in the country, a team that is very organized with dynamic players, and we were able to create our own chances but couldn’t get one to fall.”
In what was a closely contested game throughout, Michigan held a 15-13 advantage in overall shots but both teams put six shots on frame. The Wolverines outshot the Hoosiers 10-4 in the first half but IU rallied to hold a 9-5 edge in shots for the second half.
The first good scoring chance for IU came off the foot of Lisa Nouanesengsy, whose blast from 30 yards out went just wide of the goal in the 26th minute.
The second half saw Indiana jump on the attack from the start. An early corner kick found the head of Jessie Bujouves but her shot went over the cross bar. Bujouves was back at it a couple minutes later when she tried to chip a shot over the keeper but she was able to tip it over the goal.
Michigan then went on the attack and had a couple chances from in close on the IU goal but the Hoosiers were able to clear the ball off the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Hoosiers returned the favor with Nouanesengsy finding space to get off a shot from inside the 18-yard box but her shot was saved with 22 minutes left.
Then with 16 minutes left, Rebecca Candler and Monica Melink tried to connect for a goal but were not able to find the back of the net. Shortly after that, Michigan was able to get in behind the IU defenders and Nkem Ezurike put home, what would prove to be, the game-winning goal in the 75th minute.
Indiana continued to pressure the goal in the closing minutes but came up empty on the scoreboard.
The road trip continues on Sunday with Indiana playing at Michigan State starting at 12 p.m. ET. The game will be available to watch on BTN.com with a subscription.
