Ivy League visit poisonous for Patriots
PROVIDENCE, RI – A long afternoon and evening for the Francis Marion University women’s soccer team ended on a somewhat positive note, but the Patriots lost to Brown University 5-1, Wednesday (Oct. 12) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion (3-10-1) dropped its second match in three days against an Ivy League opponent. Wednesday’s contest was to have kicked off at 4 p.m., but was delayed until 7 p.m. because of a scheduling conflict with the game officials.
FMU will return home to host St. Andrews University on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
Sophomore Casey Schifano put the Patriots on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal at the 85:30 mark. It was her first score as a Patriot. The goal snapped a scoreless drought for FMU that had reached 664 minutes spanning parts of eight matches.
Brown’s Chloe Cross (3 goals, 1 assist) and Eliza Marshall (2 goals, 2 assists) accounted for all of the Bears’ tallies. Brown led 3-0 at halftime.
The Bears (8-3-1) outshot Francis Marion 28-10 and owned a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock recorded five saves, while a trio of Bear keepers accounted for four stops.
Both Yasmin Bunter and Brittney Smith had two shots for the Patriots.
