Jaime Named To A-Sun All-Academic Team
MACON, Ga. – In the first wave of Atlantic Sun Conference men’s soccer postseason awards released by league officials Tuesday, FGCU sophomore Miguel Jaime was named to the All-Academic Team.
Jaime (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) boasts a 3.59 GPA as an environmental studies major and has started 10 of the 11 games he’s appeared in this year as a central midfielder. He ranks fourth on the team with six points – the most by any non-forward – as he’s scored two goals and added two assists while helping lead FGCU to a national ranking on several occasions this year, a 7-3-3 overall record and an unprecedented sixth-straight A-Sun regular-season championship.
“The academic recognition is a great honor for Miggy,” said FGCU head coach Bob Butehorn of Jaime, who is nicknamed Miggy. “It’s a testament to him the amount of work he puts in not only on the field but also in the classroom, and it’s nice to see a great kid rewarded for all that effort.”
Stetson’s Lucas Diniz was named the A-Sun Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the senior ranked second in the league with nine goals this year and carries a 3.45 GPA as a finance major. In total, 11 players were named to A-Sun All-Academic Team, which is voted on by the league’s directors of athletics communication.
An A-Sun All-Freshman Team selection last year, Jaime has issued both of his assists in FGCU’s final two regular-season games. Most recently, he assisted on the Eagles’ lone goal in a 1-0 win at RPI No. 36 UNC Wilmington on Saturday evening to secure another marquee non-conference win for FGCU, which is now No. 31 in the RPI.
Jaime – who was named the male recipient of the FGCU Athletics Northwestern Mutual Academic Student-Athlete of the Month in August – scored his first collegiate goal earlier this year as part of FGCU’s 2-1 win on the road at Brown. He then followed it up two games later with the game-winning strike in the Eagles’ 2-0 A-Sun win at Stetson.
The 5-7 Jaime also helped support FGCU’s league-leading defense as the Eagles are again pacing the conference in nearly every key category. The Green and Blue leads the A-Sun in goals allowed (nine – 13 fewer than any other team), goals against average (0.66 – twice as low as any other team) and shutouts (seven – three more than any other team). Additionally, in A-Sun games, FGCU allowed just one goal in five matches and finished with a goal differential of +14.
FGCU – which finished with a 4-0-1 A-Sun record – is the No. 1 seed in the upcoming A-Sun Championship, which gets underway Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. as the FGCU Soccer Complex will serve as host of the match featuring No. 4 seed USC Upstate vs. No. 5 seed Jacksonville. The winner of that contest will then face FGCU in a semifinal at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
No. 2 seed UNF will host the other semifinal against No. 3 seed Lipscomb that same night. The final is set for Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
