Jambga Scores Twice as SIUE Downs Memphis
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Sophomore Devyn Jambga struck for his first two career goals Sunday as SIUE men's soccer shutout Memphis 2-0 at Korte Stadium.
The Cougars improved to 2-2-0 with the win, while Memphis remained winless at 0-4-0.
Jambga, one of seven players to come off the bench, played 33 minutes for the Cougars.
"That's one thing we've talked about with our guys is that we're a deep team," SIUE Head Coach Mario Sanchez said. "I have no problem starting different guys and bringing guys off the bench. It's definitely a strength of ours.
"Today was a great example of everyone contributing," Sanchez said. "Devyn comes in grabs his two goals and at the end everyone contributed to the shutout."
The two sides played a scoreless first half, despite opportunities by the Cougars. The biggest opportunity came in the first half when Jabari Danzy was pulled down in the penalty area in the 31st minute. SIUE was awarded a penalty kick, but Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui made the diving save, denying Justin Bilyeu's attempt.
Jambga's first tally came in the 64th minute. Mohamed Awad made a pass from the left side of the penalty area toward the back post where Jambga was able to slot it past Uzcategui for the 1-0 lead.
Just more than 10 minutes later the duo struck again. Mathias Ebbesen collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and played it down the right side for Awad, who unloaded a right-footed shot from just outside the six yard box. Uzcategui made the save but the rebound came out to the far post where Jambga was able to tap it home for the 2-0 lead.
"It feels great but it's even better to get the win and bounce back from our loss on Friday," Jambga said of his two-goal game.
Awad now has three assists in SIUE's last three games.
"We're slowly starting to see him," Sanchez said of Awad. "We are starting to see glimpses. He is a difference maker."
SIUE goalkeeper Kyle Dal Santo made two saves and earned the win to improve to 2-1-0. The shutout is the second this season and the third of his career.
The Cougars begin a four-game road trip with a two-game west coast swing. SIUE will play at San Diego State Friday and then at San Diego Sunday.
"I feel really good where we're at," said Sanchez. "Friday night we played well and today was another good game. We need to keep gaining momentum and keep getting better at what we do."
