James Beeston Named First Team All-MAAC
Siena Soccer senior captain James Beeston was named a First Team All-MAAC selection at the conference’s awards banquet in Fairfield, Conn. Red-shirt junior back Falko Friedrichs was named to the Second Team and fellow center back Danilo Markovic was selected to the All-Rookie Team.
The first two-time First Team All-MAAC selection in program history, Beeston graduates as the Saints’ all-time leader in career assists with 29. The Newcastle-Under-Lyme, England native currently ranks tied for second in the MAAC in assists (eight) and tied for third in scoring with 20 points this fall. One of just 30 Division I candidates nationally earlier this season for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, Beeston tallied 51 career points, good for seventh on Siena’s all-time scoring list.
Friedrichs earns Second Team accolades for a second consecutive season. The Cologne, Germany product started all 18 matches this season and played all but 18 minutes. Offensively he added four points on a pair of goals.
Markovic combined with Friedrichs to form a solid and durable center back tandem for the Saints this fall. The Queens, N.Y. native both started and appeared in 16 matches and tallied an assist.
The conference’s five major awards were handed out to members of five different programs. Iona’s Franklin Castellanos (Offensive Player of the Year), Monmouth’s Matt Jeffery (Defensive Player of the Year), Quinnipiac’s Borja Angoitia (Goalkeeper of the Year), Rider’s Christian Flath (Rookie of the Year) and Manhattan’s Jorden Scott (Anaconda Sports MAAC Coach of the Year) all received top honors.
In the classroom the Saints tied a program record for a second straight season by placing 10 student athletes on the MAAC All-Academic Team, reserved for players who have spent at least one academic year at their institution and possess a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. Siena’s honorees included seniors Beeston and Matt Hemsley, red-shirt juniors Adam Myers and Friedrichs, juniors Trent Williams and Nick Theobald, sophomores Matt Needham, Matt O’Brien and Nils Weddig and red-shirt freshman Colin O’Donnell.
Siena recently concluded its 2013 season with a 7-10-1 overall record and finished tied for sixth in the MAAC at 3-6-1.
