Jensen’s Goal Gives UNCG a 2-1 Win at Mercer
MACON, Ga. – Emily Jensen scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute to give UNCG women’s soccer (8-2-1, 3-0-0) a 2-1 win at Mercer (6-4-4, 1-1-2) on Sunday afternoon at Betts Stadium. The Spartans remain perfect in Southern Conference play at 3-0-0 for the sixth time in program history and first since the 2013 season.
“It’s tough to play on road versus a ream unbeaten in SoCon play,” said head coach Michael Coll. “I’m very proud of every player on the team because we limited their dangerous attacks and overall controlled the game by playing with a quick rhythm and a relentless attack. The players knew at halftime that we were playing very well and wouldn’t be kept from scoring again. Two brilliant goals today from Grace Regal and Emily Jensen, and to earn three road wins in a row to start the conference season is a big statement.”
Jensen’s second goal of the season was started on a corner kick by Kaley Tucker. After Cienna Rideout’s header hit the crossbar, Jensen put a shot into the back of the net.
Mercer scored first with a goal by Ally Fordham in the 43rd minute.
UNCG responded not even a minute later to tie the game up when Regal scored her first collegiate goal. Ashton Duty picked up an assist on the play.
The Spartans finished with a 17-9 shots advantage, including an 10-4 edge in the second half. UNCG had double the amount of corner kicks (6-3) and shots on goal (4-2) than Mercer.
Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (8-2-1) made one save in the win.
Rideout had a game-high five shots, two on goal. Duty and Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir both had two shots.
UNCG returns to Greensboro for the first time since Sept. 12 for its SoCon home-opener against Furman next Friday at 7 p.m.
