JMU Remains in First in CAA with 1-0 Win at William and Mary
WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Oct. 19, 2011 —A goal by James Madison freshman Boyd Reid (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering) gave the 20th-ranked Dukes a 1-0 victory at William and Mary in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer Wednesday night.
Reid’s early second-half goal kept JMU in first place in the league standings and also gave Dukes’ head coach Tom Martin his 450th career victory.
Martin is the winningest active coach in NCAA Division I soccer. He has a 35-year career record of 450-171-59. His record in 26 JMU seasons is 331-136-49.
JMU upped its overall record to 10-2-1, and the Dukes are now 6-1-0 in league competition. W&M’s record now stands at 8-6-0 overall and 5-3-0 in the CAA.
The Dukes, who won for the seventh time in their last eight games, are tied for first in the CAA with Old Dominion, which also has a 6-1 CAA record. ODU beat Georgia State 3-2 in overtime Wednesday after the Panthers scored twice in the final 3:31 of regulation to force an extra period.
Reid’s game-winning score came 14:11 into the second half after a flurry of JMU shots in which Reid put a rebound of his own shot into the net.
For the game W&M held a slight edge on shots, 18-16, and JMU redshirt senior goalkeeper Justin Epperson (Herndon, Va./Oakton) made three saves to register his seventh shutout of the season. W&M goalie Colin Smolinsky also had three stops.
W&M dropped to third place in the league standings with 15 points. Northeastern is fourth with 13, followed by Georgia State, Delaware and Virginia Commonwealth, all tied for fifth with 12 points.
JMU’s next game is at Georgia State on Sunday (Oct. 23). The Panthers are 7-0 at home this season.
