JMU Women Fall 4-1 at #9 Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept. 9, 2012 -- The nationally-ranked Virginia (7-1-0) women's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie with James Madison (2-4-0) in the second half and went on to post a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon in the Nike Classic at UVa's Klöckner Stadium.
Virginia, which entered the game ranked ninth in the NSCAA coaches poll and seventh by Soccer America, won its sixth straight game.
The Cavaliers went up 1-0 at halftime after Danielle Colarico scored on a 20-yard shot to the upper corner in the 18th minute. Julia Roberts set up the play with a pass to Colarico.
JMU became only the third team to score on UVA this season when the Dukes tied the game 5:10 in the second half. Senior Katie Menzie (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) scored after receiving a through ball from redshirt freshman Madyson Brown (Herndon, Va./Chantilly).
Virginia broke the tie when Makenzy Doniak converted a penalty-kick attempt in the 66th minute to put the Cavs up 2-1.
Gloria Douglas netted UVa's third goal in the 79th minute. Assists on the score were credited to Colarico and Roberts.
The Cavs' fourth goal came in the 83rd minute on a header by Kate Norbo off a pass from Amber Fry.
Virginia had 18 shots to 10 for JMU.
Dukes redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ellen Forest (Midlothian, Va./James River) made six saves. Virginia goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle Young had two saves in the first half, and Churchill O'Connell made one save in the second half.
Menzie and JMU junior Becky Sparks (Laurel Springs, N.J./Paul VI) were named to the all-tournament team.
JMU wraps up a stretch of four straight road games with a Sept. 14 match at Navy.
