Julie Martin leads Surge past Kellogg
Kellogg, MI – Seeing its first action since Sept 24th seasoning opening win over St. Catharine, the Cincinnati State women's soccer team picked up where it left off with a 4-0 win over Kellogg Community College on Saturday afternoon.
Freshmen Bittani Abner, Amber Boehm and sophomore Julie Martin, three graduates of Oak Hills High School, led the Surge offense. Abner netted her third goal of the season to open the scoring at the 9 minute mark. Sophomore Julie Martin, who was one of just 3 field players to play all 90 minutes, scored goals in the 33rd and 76th minute. Boehm scored her first goal of the season in the 89th.
Goalkeeper Kelsie Lee, who made a big save early in the game off a Kellogg break away, and the Surge defensive unit earned their second shutout of the season, holding the Kellogg Bruins to just four shots on net.
"We were able to generate a lot of chances offensively," Head Coach Wil Cagle said. "I thought Martin had one of her best games for us. Kelsie stepped up and made a big save early which helped set the tone for the game."
With the win, the Surge improve to 2-0 on the season with a 1-0 record in Region XII competition. The 2-0 start is the first time the program has done so since 2011. Suffering its fourth loss of the season, Kellogg fell to 1-4.
The Surge will conclude their weekend road trip on Sunday against Jackson Community College.
