Kadane, Spartans Upend North Florida
Jacksonville, Fla. – After playing nearly 75 minutes without a goal, John Kadane scored late in the game and the Spartans added a second goal late as USC Upstate took a key 2-0 victory over North Florida Sunday afternoon in A-Sun men's soccer action.
Upstate improved to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-1 with seven points in the A-Sun with the win. Upstate will play host to Florida Gulf Coast Friday night at 7:00 at County University Soccer Stadium. The game will serve as Upstate's Coaches vs. Cancer event to raise funding for the American Cancer Society. It is collaboration with soccer coaches throughout the country. North Florida fell to 1-10-1 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference.
The first half was played fairly evenly with Upstate taking eight shots and North Florida taking five. However, neither team could crack the scoreboard in the first half. Upstate turned up the heat in the second half, taking 13 shots to the Ospreys' six. The Spartans finished the game with a 21-11 leads in shots.
With time clicking away in the second half and the game seemingly headed for overtime, Upstate struck in the 75th-minute. Grant Kercher (Dayton, Ohio) played a through ball to John Kadane who had pushed up on the attack from his defender position. Kadane was one-on-one with the keeper and hammered a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off the UNF keeper and into the goal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. It would be all that the Spartans would need.
Despite the 1-0 lead and the constant pressure the Spartans put on North Florida which had the Spartans in control of the game and not in need of an additional score, Upstate got an insurance goal in the 89th-minute. With North Florida pushed up to try to tie the game, Dylan Hoop (Cincinnati, Ohio) gained control of the ball at midfield and got behind his defender. He then moved around the keeper and put the ball in the open goal to give Upstate a 2-0 lead.
Upstate finished the game out with Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C.) recording the 2-0 shutout. He made two saves on the day, both in the second half, as Upstate kept the pressure off of him throughout the match. UNF keeper Federico Bertele made six saves on the day.
