Kanemitsu Lifts Hounds to Double Overtime Tie With #21 Midwestern State
PORTALES, N.M. — With the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team (9-4-1; LSC 0-1-1) trailing 21st-ranked Midwestern State (8-1-4; LSC 0-1-1), late in the second half, Eishu Kanemitsu (Jr., M, Tokyo, Japan / Emily Carr Secondary School) found the back of the net on a deflection for his fourth goal of the season, to lead the Hounds to a 1-all double-overtime tie in Lone Star Conference play, Friday at ENMU Soccer Field. The goal was his third at home, this year.
With the tie, the Greyhounds are 1-0-1 against Midwestern State at home over the last two seasons. The Mustangs won the first 13 meetings between the teams, as the programs split last seasons’ series. The contest marked the Hounds’ sixth tie over the last two seasons.
The teams played to a scoreless tie in the opening half, despite the Hounds holding a 5-2 edge in overall shots. Andrew Power staked MSU to a 1-0 lead, 4:39 into the second half, after depositing a deflection from a VcMor Eligwe shot into the ENMU net. The Hounds answered at the 77:28 mark, when Kanemitsu’s shot off a Michael Stewart (Sr., D, Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch HS) deflection tied the game. Neither team managed to score in the two overtimes.
Eastern held a 19-14 edge in overall shots, but the Mustangs enjoyed a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Fredrik Widfeldt (Fr., GK, Yterby, Sweden / Katrinelundsgymnasiet) made five saves for the Hounds, while Ray Clark had four for Midwestern State
The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will return to action on Sunday, when to host 10th-ranked Incarnate Word. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. MDT.
