Kangaroos Take Out Panthers, 3-1
(Kansas City, Mo.) - UMKC men's soccer scored a season-best three goals Saturday at Durwood Stadium to grab a 3-1 win over Eastern Illinois in Summit League action.
It was the first time UMKC (5-6-1, 2-1 SL) had defeated the Panthers (6-6-1, 1-2-1 SL) in back-to-back meetings since the 1994 and 1995 seasons. The Kangaroos also posted their second win in conference play, the 18th consecutive season they have posted at least that many wins (all 18 years being in the Summit League).
The Kangaroos jumped on the Panthers from the start, with numerous breaks on goal in the opening period. UMKC had 3-4 scoring chances in the half, while the Panthers were kept mostly to shooting from the outside.
In the 30th minute the 'Roos got on the board thanks to a run down the left side from junior Mo Ramahi. He beat his defender, angled toward the goal ahead of the EIU defense, and finished a shot into the far post to claim his first career goal as a 'Roo.
UMKC went into the break with the 1-0 lead, and came out in the second period with a few more chances. The Kangaroos made it 2-0 on a shot that was hammered home by freshman defender Konner Knoll after David Sarabia headed a ball back to him on a corner kick by Ramahi in the 63rd minute.
The Panthers came back just a couple minutes later in the 65th minute to cut the margin back to one after a long throw into the box was headed in by Chris Boswell.
UMKC put it away in the 73rd minute though, on a heads up play by freshman forward Jordan Rideout. After a foul occurred about 40 yards away from the EIU goal, Rideout saw the goalkeeper was off his line and quickly fired a bomb over his head from way out to make it 3-1.
Sophomore Kevin Corby picked up his first career win, making six saves, most of which came in the final 20 minutes of the contest. The final shot count was 12-11 in favor of EIU, although UMKC had the majority of scoring chances in the contest.
The Kangaroos will head to Missouri State on Tuesday for a non-conference game in Springfield, Mo. at 7:00 p.m.
