BALTIMORE – UMBC senior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye ( Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) recorded his first career two-goal game and added an assist as the 11th–ranked Retrievers (3-0-1) rallied to defeat Appalachian State (0-2-1), 3-1, in a Hampton Inn BWI Classic contest played at Retriever Soccer Park.

 

The Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak to 14 (10-0-4) dating back to the 2013 season.

 

The action in the first thirty minutes took place mostly between the 18's, but the sides exchanged goals in a 74-second span late in the stanza. The Mountaineers struck first when back Walker White pounced on a rebound in the box and beat UMBC red-shirt freshman netminder Phil Breno (Mount Airy, Md./South Carroll) with a low shot into the right corner of the goal.

 

UMBC, which allowed the game's first goal for the first time this season, wasted little time in tying the contest. Kansaye took a corner from the right side and the ball was held in by senior back Marquez Fernandez (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh), who headed it to the far left post. Freshman forward Cormac Noel (Stalybridge, Cheshire, England) headed in Fernandez' cross from four yards out.

 

Kansaye took matters into his own hands and feet in the second half. With just under four minutes expired in the second half, the crafty midfielder outmaneuvered the Mountaineer defense, deked goalie Paul West and scored into an unguarded net from five yards out to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

 

The Retriever defense stifled ASU for the rest of the half, allowing the Mountaineers only two shots. Kansaye iced the contest as the Retrievers drew a foul deep in ASU territory in the 89' and the UMBC midfielder calmly bent a free kick from the left side of the box around a wall and beyond the reach of West from 22 yards away.

 

The UMBC team captain had tallied six previous goals, but never more than one in a contest. He now has eight career goals and 18 assists.

 

West made three saves and Breno gathered in one for their respective sides. UMBC outshot ASU, 11-5 and took nine corners to just three for the Mountaineers.

 

UMBC travels to Las Vegas for the Nike UNLV Invitational this weekend. They will meet the host Rebels on Friday evening, Sept. 12 and face Cal State-Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 14.
