Keane, Metz Lead SDSU Past TCU, 4-0
The San Diego State women’s soccer team snapped its four-game winless streak Friday night with a convincing 4-0 win at TCU. Hannah Keane scored twice for SDSU and Sophie Metz added a goal and an assist for an Aztec squad that improved to 6-5-3 (1-0-1 Mountain West). The Horned Frogs, meanwhile, fall to 6-6-1 and 0-2 in the MW.
SDSU, playing before the ninth-largest crowd in Garvey-Rosenthal Stadium history (1,921), snapped its scoring drought at 357 minutes, 49 seconds when Metz scored just 3 minutes, 17 seconds into the game. The redshirt sophomore newcomer notched her first career goal and points as an Aztec when she took a cross from Rachael McGlinchy. Metz, after receiving the pass, fired from the middle of the box and slotted her shot past TCU goalkeeper Alicen Wright. The assist was McGlinchy’s first of the season.
After a back-and-forth 40 minutes, San Diego State, which was pressuring offensively as the half came to a close, found the back of the net 25 seconds ahead of the halftime horn. SDSU played the ball to the right side to freshman Haley Locker, who beat her defender and sent in a low cross to the left side of the box. Keane was the recipient and the freshman scored her fourth goal of the campaign to put the visitors up 2-0. For Locker, the assist was her second of the season.
The Aztecs maintained their two-goal cushion for the next 26 minutes, 30 seconds, until Keane made it a three-goal advantage for SDSU at the 71:30 mark. Metz, who added her third point of the evening when she was credited with the assist, took a free kick and the subsequent rebound went in the air. The 5-10 Keane then headed the ball past Wright and moved the nylon. The multi-goal game is the first of her career and third of the season for San Diego State, which received two goals from Cat Walker and Megan Jurado against Central Florida and Hawai’i, respectively.
In the 85th minute, the Aztecs secured the victory with their fourth goal of the night and first of the season from Sarah Halverson. The junior, who was playing against her sister, Kristin Halverson, for the third time of her career scored for the third consecutive outing vs. TCU. In three San Diego State wins over the Horned Frogs, Halverson has three goals and two assists in her career. Goalkeeper Megan Allaire, meanwhile, picked up the assist on the scoring play as her kick bounced past the backline and eventually found Halverson. Allaire replaced Boaz in the game and played the final 11 minutes, 45 seconds.
Boaz and Allaire both made two saves to record SDSU’s sixth shutout of the season. Their counterpart, Wright, made seven stops for the home side.
The Aztecs finished with a 23-15 edge in shots and an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The 23 shots were a season high as were the 11 shots on goal.
SDSU extended its winning streak over TCU to three games and marks the second consecutive Fort Worth outing where it has scored four goals. Two seasons ago, San Diego State won by a 4-1 margin. The Aztecs are now 7-3 all-time vs. the Horned Frogs and 3-1 on the TCU campus.
SDSU, which sits in first place in the MW at the end of Friday, steps out of league play on Sunday to face Texas (9-4; 3-2 Big 12) in Austin. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. CT and will be televised on the Longhorn Network. Audio is available via TexasSports.com.
