Kickers Top Falcons in 2OT
The Warhawk women's soccer team ground out a 1-0 victory in double overtime against UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon in River Falls, Wisconsin.
The last 2OT match UW-W took part in was almost exactly a year ago from today's contest, October 23, 2010 when Whitewater topped UW-Eau Claire on the road 3-2.
The Warhawks kept the pressure on the Falcon defense the entire match rattling off 32 shots including 19 on goal.
Both teams were consistently aggressive out of the gate with RF putting a shot on goal just 28 seconds in but the header was thwarted by Warhawk goalie Jordan Myers (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley). UW-W had two back-to-back chances to take the lead at 4:43 and 5:25 with shots by Emily Gerber (DeForest/DeForest) and Pamela Lisowe (New Holstein/New Holstein) respectively, both were saved by the Falcon's goalkeeper. The Warhawks put five more shots on goal before halftime but none found the back of the net.
Continuing the onslaught of shots in the second half with 13 total, eight on goal. However, it was River Falls that had the first opportunity of the half just 0:41 in but Myers came up with the save. Five Whitewater players put shots on goal in the half including three from Gerber and two by Lisowe but both defenses held fast with the match scoreless after regulation play.
In the first overtime period, Lisowe put a shot on goal that was saved by Rebecca Kramer, the RF goalie, at 93:52. Jessica Allemang (Wauwatosa/West) had back-to-back opportunities just seven seconds apart with the first blocked at 96:50 and the second saved by Kramer at 96:57. Myers thwarted another header attempt at 98:38. Once again, the horn would sound but the teams would remain on the field for another period.
The second ten-minute overtime belonged to UW-W. A shot 25 seconds in by Alyssa Chamberlain (De Pere/De Pere) went wide and the Falcons fired back with a shot of their own but Myers came through with a save, her ninth of the match. Christina Tooren (Hoffman Estates, IL/Hoffman Estates) answered with a shot on goal at 102:49 that was saved by Kramer. Two River Falls substitutions followed including a goalie change for the Falcons. River Falls produced its last opportunity at 102:59 but Myers posted her eleventh save of the match to shut down the Falcons. Tooren had another chance at 103:16. Refusing to be denied she fired a shot on the ground when the goalkeeper came out of the goal that found the back of the bottom left corner of the net for her eighth goal of the season to give the Warhawks the win.
Myers recorded her third shutout of the season as UW-W's goalie to improve to 8-4-1. UW-RF's Rachel Thompson took the loss to fall to 5-11 overall.
Whitewater will travel to Dubuque, Iowa Tuesday, October 25 for a match against Clarke College at 1:30.
