Killer B's account for two goals in Francis Marion's 2-1 win over Winthrop
FLORENCE, S.C. – Sophomore Yasmin Bunter and senior Erin Breen each scored once and Francis Marion University held off a furious Winthrop University rally in the final minutes to claim a 2-1 win, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4) in women's soccer action.
Francis Marion improves to 2-3-1 and will travel to face Presbyterian College on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Winthrop drops to 1-3-0.
Bunter changed the scoreboard in the second minute (1:31) as she collected a through ball from Teri Kourtis and scored on a 13-yard shot from the left side. It was her second tally of the year and seventh of her young career.
Breen doubled the margin to 2-0 at 55:45 when she scored on a direct kick from 18 yards out. The sequence was set up when Bunter was taken down just outside the 18-yard box. Then on the kick, Bunter served as the decoy or dummy shooter and after her run through Breen nailed the ball into the upper left of the net. It was Breen’s first career goal in 36 matches.
Winthrop outshot Francis Marion 21-13, including 14-2 in the second half. The Eagles finally broke through and trimmed the margin to 2-1 in the 88th minute. Junior Ariel Kunde took a feed from Grace Radler and chipped the ball over FMU senior goalkeeper Lauren Vetock from eight yards out.
Vetock made a save on a shot by Krystyna Freda at 89:33 that resulted in a Winthrop corner kick, but on the ensuing corner, Megan Pritts’ header was wide of the left post.
Vetock finished with 10 saves, her highest total in two seasons of wearing the red, white, and blue. Winthrop junior keeper Sarah Schippers recorded nine saves as 11 of FMU’s 13 attempts were on frame. Both Bunter and freshman Elizabeth Asare registered four shots.
Francis Marion led in corner kick 8-4. The victory was FMU’s 100th home win, and that mark was reached in only 132 matches.
