Kilty's First Career Goal Highlights Victory
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Senior defender Stephen Kilty (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) scored the first goal of his career on a second-half penalty kick as The University of Scranton men’s soccer team defeated Ursinus College, 2-0, on Wednesday evening at Patterson Field.
Kilty converted a corner kick in the 66th minute to put the Royals (2-0-2) ahead, 2-0, following a yellow card in the penalty area on an Ursinus player. He now has seven career points – one goal and five assists, four of which came last season when Kilty was named third-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Scranton took a 1-0 lead into halftime after senior forward John Spadaro (Stony Point, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) scored on a header just 16 seconds before the break. The goal was Spadaro’s second of the season and sixth of his career.
Junior forward Nick Paganelli (Ossining, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory) picked up an assist on Spadaro’s goal, his second assist of the season and of his career.
Freshman goalkeeper Eric Hintz (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) made one save for the first shutout of his career. The Royals held a 17-7 advantage in shots over the Bears (1-4).
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 14, when it travels to Baltimore, Md., to take on Johns Hopkins at 4:30 p.m.
