King falls at North Greenville 2-1
TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The King University women's soccer continued their road trip with a Conference Carolinas matchup at North Greenville University. The Crusaders tallied a goal in each half, and held off a late Tornado rally to take the contest 2-1 as both teams battle for a Conference Carolinas Tournament spot.
The Crusaders (6-8, 3-4 CC) got the first scoring chance of the game in the third minute as King goalkeeper Nicole Dagher turned away Franki Jumper's shot. North Greenville continued to pressure the Tornado (4-8-2, 1-3-2 CC) as Dagher came up with another save in the seventh minute.
The pressure finally paid off in the 33rd minute as Lindsay Tuten had her first shot saved, but collected the rebound and slid the ball into the net to give North Greenville a 1-0 lead. The Crusaders ripped four more shots the rest of the half, one being on net, but it was stopped by Dagher as North Greenville took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Crusaders started the second half with more scoring opportunities, and extended their lead in the 68th minute as Jumper netted her first golf of the season with an assist to Courtney Etheridge.
King then brought the play to the other end asRachel Thorpe got the Tornado on the board with her eighth goal of the season. Just two minutes later, Kaitlin Robinson had a chance to net the equalizer, but her shot was turned away to keep the Crusaders in the lead. In the 79th minute, Devon Shanklin tried to even the score at 2-2, but her shot was also stopped.
King didn't give up as they had a corner king with 25 seconds remaining, but they couldn't find the back of the net as North Greenville took the 2-1 victory.
North Greenville outshot the Tornado 12-5 while both teams had six corner kicks apiece.
King will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Barton College. Kickoff from Wilson, N.C. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
