Knights Fall to Southern New Hampshire, 2-1
Manchester, N.H. - Lorena Russi's fourth marker of the year gave the Queens College women's soccer team a 1-0 advantage over Southern New Hampshire, but a pair of unanswered goals from the Penmen doomed the Knights, 2-1, in a game played in Manchester, New Hampshire on Wednesday. With the loss, Queens falls to 3-2 on the season. The Penmen are 3-1-1.
Things looked bright from the start for QC, as they welcome Kristina Ikonmou back into the starting lineup following an injury. The midfielder would have an impact late in the first half. Meanwhile, Knights' goalie, Mersina Onesto was challenged early on as Morgan Branco let go a shot in the fifth minute that forced her to make a save.
The first prime scoring chance for Queens came in the 21st minute when Ikonomou's shot was parried by Penmen keeper, Samantha Whittier. The game remained scoreless past the half-hour mark, until QC got on the board first.
Ikonomou pressed forward and had her shot on goalie deflected away. From there, Russi gained possession and put the ball in the back of the net to give Queens a 1-0 lead. The Knights lead would last barely three minutes, though.
Off a corner kick from the right side, Southern New Hampshire's Alexa Poulin curved a ball towards the net that was redirected past Onesto by Trisha Luis, evening the score at 1-1. The game remained tied into halftime.
The second half began with Bethi Ledoux passing the ball to Ashley Jaskula, who hit a slow roller past Onesto and into the back of the net; giving the Penmen a 2-1 advantage. From there, Erika Riera, Russi and Bridget Gleason all took shots at the goal, to no avail. The game ended by that 2-1 score.
In the game, the Knights and the Penmen both took seven shots. Onesto made three saves and QC committed only seven fouls.
The team returns to action this weekend, as they take a trip through western New York with East Coast Conference matches with Daemen and Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday and Sunday.
