Lady Flames Blank Tigers, 1-0
It was a sea of green Saturday night at the Lee Soccer Field as the Lady Flames hosted their annual Kickin’ it For Kid’s with Cancer match against Olivet Nazarene. The match helped to raise money for the Austin Hatcher Foundation to benefit kids diagnosed with cancer.
The Lady Flames didn’t disappoint the home crowd topping visiting Olivet Nazarene 1-0. Lee jumped out to an early lead at the 10 minute mark, on what proved to be the game winning goal by sophomore Chloe Woody. Amy Cochran assisted the goal on a beautiful corner kick to give Lee the early advantage.
From there the defense set in and neither team allowed a goal. Lady Flames Keeper Leah Wilson recorded four saves in keeping a clean sheet. Tigers Keeper, Wendy Espejel notched three saves while allowing the one goal.
"First and foremost I want to say how pleased we were to be able to put on an event like we did tonight with the Kickin' It Benefit game and I am so appreciative of the crowd that turned out to be a part of such a wonderful event." stated coach Matt Yelton.
"I thought that we saw a very inspired Olivet team tonight and one that played at a much higher level than they did in Thursday's match. If they continue to play at that level I think they will be a team that goes deep into the postseason."
Coach Yelton was very pleased with his team’s performance on the defensive end stating, "I thought Kim (Conrad) and Clair (Lanter) did a great job of controlling our back line, and Amy (Cochran) and Caro (Caroline Scales) were very good at making sure that we didn't let them get in behind in the wide areas of the field. It is our first shutout of the year, so we are happy to take that away."
The Lady Flames had 11 shots, four which were on frame. The Tigers had 10 shots of their own, also recording four shots on goal.
A big advantage in the game for Lee was on corner kicks. The Lady Flames had six total, scoring off of one of them. The Tigers were unable to record any corner kicks in the match.
"Even though we were never able to get the second goal, we certainly created a lot of good opportunities to score and came very close to finishing it off."
"It is always hard to come back and play well after a big win, but we dug deep and showed a lot of fight to get the result tonight." added Yelton.
With the win the Lady Flames moved to 3-1 on the young season. The loss dropped Olivet Nazarene to 4-2 on the year.
In the opening match Lindsey Wilson rebounded from Thursday’s overtime loss to Lee and topped Vanguard 2-1. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie in the first half with the game winner coming on an own goal by Vanguard.
