Lady Hornets Advance to Semi-Finals
Box Score Alabama State defeated Arkansas Pine-Bluff in the first round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Soccer Tournament with a final of 5-2.
"It's nice to get the first game out of your system, so you can advance. Its been awhile since we won in the first round." Said Head Coach Jodie Smith. "Going into tomorrow we really have to remain focused. I feel like we are comfortable here but we just have to stay focused and be disciplined. "
In the first period, the Lady Hornets came out on the offensive by taking a 19-1 shot advantage over the Lady Lions. ASU scored in the 18th minute on a goal by Anastasia McCleary. Ariela Lewis penetrated the defense to score from 5 yards out in the 28th minute. Then, in the 37th minute Aaliyah Lewis scored the final goal of the period from 20 yards out off an assist from McCleary, to give the Lady Hornets a 3-0 lead going into the half.
In the second period, the Lady Hornets out shot the Lady Lions 12-5. The Lady Hornets opened up the second period with another goal by Aaliyah Lewis in the 50th minute. The Lady Lions scored in the 53rd minute, of the second period, on a goal from Celeste Carrera. The Lady Hornets Ariela Lewis would score in the 59th minute giving ASU a 5-1 lead. The Lady Lions Celeste Carrera scored the final goal of the match in the 76th minute making it 5-2.
The Lady Hornets will face the winner of the Prairie View A&M Friday at 5:30 p.m.
