Lady Hornets Defeat UT-Chattanooga
September 3, 2013
The Alabama State soccer team defeated Tennessee-Chattanooga 3-2 at the ASU Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Hornets (3-1) started the game on the offensively with senior defender Samantha Bruno scoring her first goal of the season on an assist from freshman forwardAaliyah Lewis in the 27th minute. The Lady Mocs (1-2) then responded in the 35th minute off a penalty kick to make the score 1-1 going into halftime.
The Hornets dominated the second period as senior forward India Pleasant added to her goal total for the season in the 55th minute with an assist from sophomore forwardAnastasia McCleary to extend the lead 2-1. But, yet again the Lady Mocs responded in the 66th minute scoring an unassisted goal and tying the score 2-2. Pleasant scored her second goal of thematch in the 72nd minute of play with an assist from sophomore middle fielder Alayna Smith as the Lady Hornets captured the victory 3-2.
"I feel like we're improving everyday, we still have lots to work on but we're finding ways towin ." Head Coach Jodie Smith said. "The thing we are most impressed with is our bench and the freshmen that are really stepping up to the plate. We have confidence in them to the point where we know that the play does not fall off. We played a quality ninety minutes, so I'm very pleased about that."
Junior goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had another great game capturing six saves in today's matchup.
Alabama State will return to action Friday, September 6th at 7 p.m. as they travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face Lipscomb and Belmont on September 8th before returning home for a match-up againstUNC Asheville at 4p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex on Sept. 13th.
