Lady Hornets Earn #3 Seed
Riding a conference-best seven-game winning streak down the stretch, the hard-charging Alabama State women's soccer team earned a No. 3 seed in the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament that will take place November 6-9 at the John Hunt Soccer Complex in Huntsville, Ala.
This is the first year the event is being held at this facility. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament based on conference results.
A team receives three points for each conference win and one point for a tie. The winner of the tournament will earn the SWAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA tournament, if eligible.
Last year, Jackson State University claimed its second title in school history. Only four other schools have won the championship title (Alabama A&M, Grambling State, Mississippi Valley State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff).
ASU was the runner-up in last year's tournament.
Admission to the tournament is free.
The Lady Hornets (10-9 overall, 7-3 SWAC) will face sixth-seeded Mississippi Valley State (4-10-3 overall, 4-3-3 SWAC) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
In other matchups, top-seeded Howard University will play No. 8 Alabama A&M and No. 4 Jackson State will take on No. 5 Texas Southern in a first round rematch from last year. The winners of these matches will play against each other at Friday at 3:30 p.m. in a semifinal.
The winner of the ASU and MVSU game will play the winner of No. 2 Prairie View A&M and No. 7 Southern. The other semifinal is set for Friday at 6 p.m.
In the team's previous meeting, the Lady Hornets defeated the Devilettes, 3-1 on October 24 at the ASU Soccer Complex.
Kayla Edwards, a sophomore from Cypress, Calif., came through with two first-half goals. The trio of Edwards, Shelby Vienna-Hallam and Aaliyah Lewis was once again a force to be reckoned with up front as each applied pressure early and often.
Lewis added two assists and Vienna-Hallam scored in the 33rd minute and also had an assist.
Heather Craddock scored the Devilettes' only goal of the match. Kylee Hathaway made eight saves for ASU while MVSU's Rita Gyasi made 10 saves.
The game will feature the top four scorers in the conference. Lewis ranks first with 43 points, MVSU's Nykosi Simmons is second with 27 points, ASU's Vienna-Hallam is next with 24 points while Edwards is in a four-way tie for the fourth most points in the conference with 19.
