Lady Lions Rule Monarchs In 1-0 Battle To Open Season With Home Win
Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's soccer team kicked off the 2011 season in a winning way earlier this afternoon with a 1-0 shutout victory over the visiting Monarchs of Methodist University in the opening game of the Inaugural PC Fall Invitational. Piedmont rode a first half score to the victory as sophomore Marjorie Hammond earned the shutout at home.
The Lady Lions started off today's contest getting the better of the run of play with several early chances before capitalizing on their best chance which came in the 30th minute of play. Breaking free with the ball down the line was junior Kristen Murri whose service found the outstretched foot of classmate Dilyn MacLean who tapped it past the outstretch hands of Sara Altman in goal.
With the lead now in the home team's hands, Piedmont tried to hang on under constant pressure through the early part of the second half. However, with direction from their sophomore keeper and steady play from the back four, PC kept their 1-0 advantage until the end to grab a season opening win on the turf.
Leading the way in shots for PC was MacLean and sophomore Laura Goodwin who each had four a piece. Hammond collected a save in the shutout effort to move her record as a starter to a perfect 2-0.
With the victory, the Lady Lions move to 1-0 on the season. PC gets right back on the field for the second of back-to-back weekend contests when they host N.C. Wesleyan College on Sunday, September 4th with kickoff set for a morning start at 11:00 am.
