Lady Tiger soccer splits a pair of one-goal games
There was plenty of drama involved in the Cowley College women’s soccer teams first pair of games as both contests were not decided until the final minute of play. Playing in Dallas, Texas, the Lady Tigers defeated Hill College 4-3 on Friday before losing to Mountain View College 1-0 on Saturday.
On Friday, Cowley raced out to a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from freshman Jessica Santos de Sa and sophomore Teryn Engels. However, Hills College answered back with a pair of goals to tie the game at 2-2 at the end of the first half.
Traci Cooper’s goal 7:43 into the second half put Hill College in front 3-2. Trailing for the first time, freshmen Sierra Palacio-Oliver, Talia McNickle, and Brittany Estrada came off the bench to provide the Lady Tigers with a lift.
“Those three gave us a huge boost of energy once we got down in the second half,” Cowley head coach Dane Straight said.
Cowley tied the game at 3-3 on Santos de Sa’s second goal of the game with 4:59 remaining, and completed the comeback with what turned out to be the game-winning goal by freshman Sammy Miller with only 1:13 left to play.
“We found out a little about our team and saw quite a few things we need to work on before we open conference play,” Straight said. “Overall, it was a good experience for us. It was good to see that when pressed we do have the ability to come back.”
Cowley returned to action on Saturday to face Mountain View College. Despite being out-shot 11-3, Cowley managed to keep the game scoreless until Gloria Flores was able to head a ball past Lady Tiger goalkeeper Erika Carpenter for the game’s only goal with less than a minute remaining.
“Our youth and inexperience showed a bit in this game,” Straight said.
Cowley, which is now 1-1 on the season, will prepare to open conference play at Coffeyville Thursday at 5 p.m. The Lady Red Ravens are 0-1 after falling to Northeastern Oklahoma by a score of 4-2 in their season opener.
Straight said the team will be busy fine tuning things prior to the game at Coffeyville.
“I hope to see us improve on passing and trusting our teammates to do their job,” Straight said. “It will be our first game on turf so we will need to work on slowing the other team down.”
