Lamar blanks Texas Southern, 4-0
Sept. 14, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – Freshman Bailey Fontenot registered her first career shutout to lead the Lamar University women’s soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Texas Southern in a non-conference game Friday.
Fontenot made two saves as Lamar (3-4-1) ran its unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1).
“Bailey made two nice saves,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “She had good footwork and was in the right position to stop those shots.”
Kimmy Albeno scored twice for Lamar in the first half to give the Lady Cardinals a 2-0 lead at intermission. Kristin Bos assisted on both of Albeno’s goals.
Bos made it 3-0 15:10 into the second half on an assist from Laura Hicks. It was Bos’ team-leading sixth goal of the season. Taylor Mitchell closed out the scoring when she rifled a direct kick past Texas Southern goalkeeper Lillana Hernandez.
Rebecca Hajny made two saves in the first half for Texas Southern (1-7-0). Hernandez made five saves in the second half for the Lady Tigers.
“I thought we played much better in the second half,” Cervantes said. “We tried to do a little too much in the first half. We simplified things in the second half.”
Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday when it closes its four-game homestand by hosting Alcorn State. For tickets, call (409) 880-1715, or visit LamarCardinals.com.
