Lamar edged by McNeese State
Sept. 28, 2012
LAKE CHARLES, La. - Sarah LaLanne's goal with 46.2 seconds remaining in the first half proved to be the difference as McNeese State edged Lamar 1-0 in the Southland Conference women's soccer opener for both teams Friday night.
LaLanne slammed a cross from Kaitlin Tue past Lamar goalkeeper Bailey Fontenot, who had no chance on the play. Fontenot made eight saves for Lamar (4-7-1, 0-1-0).
The Lady Cardinals had a good chance to tie the game near the end, but Lorna Maudslay's shot was stopped by McNeese State goalkeeper Katie Seeber.
McNeese State (6-4-2, 1-0-0) held a 9-3 edge in shots on goal for the game.
"We played very well in the first half, but that late goal deflated us," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "We had to change our game plan in the second half. We made one mistake, and it ended up in the back of the net."
Lamar returns to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when it hosts Nicholls in a Southland Conference game. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715 or visit LamarCardinals.com.
