Lamar edges Nicholls for first SLC win
THIBODAUX, La. – Kimmy Albeno tied a Lamar record with her seventh career game-winning goal as the Cardinals picked up their first Southland Conference victory of the season with a 2-1 decision over Nicholls in a women’s soccer game Friday.
Albeno, who scored on a crossing pass from Kristin Bos, tied Lisa Hance for the Lamar record. Jannet Hernandez also scored for Lamar (4-7-1 overall, 1-3-1 Southland), which snapped a six-game winless string.
Hernandez gave Lamar a 1-0 lead with 8:16 left in the first half, converting a pass from Shavonn Johnson. That goal snapped Lamar’s scoreless drought at 513 minutes, 27 seconds.
“That was an amazing goal, a full volley out of midair,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “That was a great weight off of my back, with us getting that goal.”
Albeno’s goal gave Lamar a 2-0 lead with 12:23 remaining in the second half, but Nicholls (9-2-1, 3-2-0) made things interesting when Spencer Valdespino scored her conference-leading 11th goal of the season just 47 seconds later, cashing in on a scramble in front of the Lamar net.
“Kimmy’s goal proved to be huge,” Cervantes said. We did what we needed to do for the win.”
Bailey Fontenot made six saves for the Cardinals. Taylor Mosley made five saves for Nicholls.
“Hopefully, this will give us some confidence for the rest of the season,” Cervantes said. “We put a full 90 minutes together today.”
Lamar returns to action with a Southland Conference game at 1 p.m. Sunday at Southeastern Louisiana.
