Lamar heads to Northwestern St. for makeup
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team looks for its first Southland Conference victory of the season when it travels to Northwestern State for a 7 p.m. Tuesday contest.
Tuesday’s game is a makeup of Friday’s game that was postponed due to lightning and unplayable conditions at Northwestern State.
Lamar (3-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 Southland) also looks to snap a three-game skid. The Cardinals opened Southland Conference play with a 3-0 loss to visiting Oral Roberts on Sunday. Northwestern State dropped a 2-0 decision to defending SLC champion Stephen F. Austin on Sunday.
“We’re struggling a little bit right now, but we will get things turned around,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “It’s still early in the season.”
Kimmy Albeno leads Lamar in scoring with 11 points on five goals and one assist. The junior from Bellflower, Calif., is Lamar’s all-time leader in goals (22) and points (51). Freshman Jennifer Yacuta is second on the Cardinals in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist.
Brooke Eastburg (2-0-4) and Johanna Sigvardsson (1-2-4) are tied for the Northwestern state lead in scoring.
Lamar leads the overall series 3-2-1. Last season, Lamar posted a 1-0 win home victory over Northwestern State.
Following Tuesday’s game, Lamar returns home for a pair of Southland Conference contests. The Cardinals host Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Friday and Houston Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday.
