Lamar heads to Southeastern Louisiana
Oct. 6, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team looks for its second straight Southland Conference victory when it travels to Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Lady Cardinals (5-7-1 overall, 1-1 conference) have been idle since last Sunday’s 1-0 home victory over Nicholls. Lamar is tied for fifth place with Oral Roberts in the nine-team league. The top six teams qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament.
Sophomore Kimmy Albeno, who scored the game-winning goal against Nicholls, leads the Lady Cardinals with eight goals, tying the single-season record set by Lisa Hance last season. Sophomore Kristin Bos is second on the team with seven goals. Albeno’s 19 points are just two shy of the record of 21 set by Hance last season.
Southeastern Louisiana (7-5-1, 1-1-1) battled to a 0-0 tie with Sam Houston State on Friday night. The Lions are led by Maiya Cooper, who has 20 points on nine goals and two assists.
Southeastern Louisiana leads the all-time series 3-2, but the Lady Cardinals have won the last two meetings, including last season’s 1-0 win at Southeastern Louisiana.
“Every game in the Southland Conference is tough,” Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We need to focus on playing one game at a time. Southeastern Louisiana is a good team, and we have to play our best.”
Following Sunday’s game, Lamar returns home to host Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Friday and Northwestern State at 1 p.m. Oct. 14.
