Lamar heads to UTSA Classic
Aug. 30, 2012
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team travels to San Antonio this weekend for a pair of games in the UTSA Classic.
The Lady Cardinals (1-2-0) face Kent State (2-0-1) at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Eastern Michigan (1-1-1) at 10 a.m. Sunday.
“We’re going to play two pretty good teams,” first-year Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. “We’re going to be playing two games away from home on turf. When the weekend is over, we’re going to see where we stand.”
Lamar comes off a 6-0 win at Southern last week, Cervantes’ first victory at Lamar. The coach hopes his team can build off of that triumph.
“We started putting things together in that game. Now we have to put a full 90 minutes together,” Cervantes said. “This weekend, we have to stay disciplined and focus on what we do well.”
Taylor Mitchell, who scored twice in the win over Southern, leads the Lady Cardinals with two goals and four points. Kristin Bos, who had the game-winning goal against the Jaguars, leads Lamar with 15 shots and nine shots on goal.
The two games at UTSA wrap up Lamar’s five-game road swing to open the season. The Lady Cardinals host Prairie View A&M in the home opener at 7 p.m. Sept. 7. For ticket information, call (409) 880-1715, or visit LamarCardinals.com.
