LU women’s soccer hosts Grambling St. on Friday
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women’s soccer team opens the home portion of its 2011 schedule by hosting Grambling State at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lamar Soccer Complex.
Lamar (0-1-0) opened the season with a 2-0 loss at TCU on Sunday.
“We were encouraged by our performance at TCU,” Lamar coach Dewi Hardman said. “We’ve had a good week of training, and we’ll be prepared.”
Lamar is 0-1-1 all-time against Grambling. The Lady Cardinals dropped a 6-0 decision to Grambling at Cardinal Stadium in 2007, the first year of Lamar’s program. The teams last met on Sept. 27, 2009, battling to a 2-2 tie at the Lamar Soccer Complex, a contest that saw Lamar fire a school-record 45 shots.
Lamar went 5-2-2 at home last season, and is 7-5-3 in the two-year history of the Lamar Soccer Complex.
“We’re excited to be at home,” Hardman said. “It will be good to get back to comfortable surroundings.”
This is the season opener for Grambling State. The Lady Tigers, members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, went 2-15-0 overall last season and 0-4-0 in conference play.
Hardman said Grambling State is not a team to be taken lightly, despite last season’s record.
“They work hard,” Hardman said of the Lady Tigers. “We expect them to be athletic and very fit.”
Grambling State played the first-ever game in the Lamar Soccer Complex, posting a 2-1 win over Northwestern State in the opening game of the Lamar Soccer Classic on Sept. 25, 2009.
