Lamar storms to first victory of the season
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Lamar Lady Cardinals didn't need to drench coach Orlando Cervantes with cold water after his first victory. Mother Nature took care of that.
Cervantes and the Lady Cardinals rolled to a 6-0 win over Southern University on Friday night in a game that was played that was played in a torrential downpour for the early part of the second half and in a steady rain after that. The rain didn't dampen the spirits of Cervantes or the Lady Cardinals (1-2) as they got their first-year coach his inaugural win.
"I'm very elated to get that first win," Cervantes said. I'm enthusiastic to see what this team can do."
Kristin Bos and Lorna Maudslay scored for Lamar under dry conditions in the first half, as the Lady Cardinals took a 2-0 lead into intermission. The floodgates opened from above as the second half got under way, and the Lamar offense opened its floodgates as well,
Taylor Mitchell scored the first of her two goals just 64 seconds after the break. Kimmy Albeno scored 97 seconds later, and the rout was on. Mitchell and Alejandra Amador closed out the scoring for Lamar later in the half.
Bos set a school record with seven shots on goal, breaking the old mark of six set by Lisa Hance against Prairie View A&M in 2008.
Bailey Fontenot and Elizabeth Silas shared the shutout for the Lady Cardinals. Lamar returns to action next weekend at the UTSA Tournament before opening the home season at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 against Prairie View A&M.
