Lancers outduel Patriots 6-1
FARMVILLE, VA – Junior defender Kylie Allen scored her first career goal off a second-half corner kick, but Francis Marion University was unable to overcome three first-half scores as the Patriots fell to Longwood University 6-1, Tuesday evening (Sept. 30) in women’s soccer action.
Francis Marion will play host to Winthrop University on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 5 p.m. on Hartzler Field.
Longwood scored a trio of goals in the opening half – in the ninth, 28th, and 37th minutes – to lead 3-0 at intermission.
A penalty kick score and an unassisted tally took the margin to 5-0 before Allen headed in a corner kick from sophomore Kelly Anthony at the 81:43 mark. Longwood added an insurance goal in the 85th minute to complete the scoring.
FMU junior goalkeeper Taylor O’Berry recorded eight saves in 73 minutes of action, while freshman Casey Murakami made one stop in a relief appearance. Longwood keeper Maria Kirby had two saves in 45 minutes of action.
Francis Marion registered seven shots, while Longwood attempted 25. The Lancers held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Anthony and sophomore Tori Whigham each had two shots to pace the Patriots.
Trailing just 2-0, FMU senior Chanel Harris hit the post with her shot attempt in the 31st minute.
