Last Second Goal Gives NU 1-1 Draw At W&M
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Simon Cox's goal with three seconds left in regulation helped the Northeastern men's soccer team (4-1-1) force a draw against William & Mary (2-4-2) on Saturday in the CAA opener for both squads, 1-1.
Oliver Blum, who replaced freshman Dylan Faber (one save) at halftime, began the play that led the game-tying goal with a free kick near midfield. Blum then sent the ball towards the Tribe goal, where Cox sent a header over William & Mary goalkeeper Bennett Jones for the score.
Northeastern outshot the Tribe 15-12, its most shots of the season. The Huskies also earned six corner opportunities to the Tribe's five.
Despite holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal during the first half of play, it was the Tribe who capitalized first to take a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. On one of the Tribe's three corner kicks during the opening 45 minutes, Michael Teiman connected on a header past Faber off an entry pass from Ben Anderson for his first goal of the season.
Northeastern would respond with offensive pressure on Tribe goalkeeper Bennett Jones on shots from Don Anding, Donovan Fayd'Herbe de Maudave and Dante Marini, but Jones was there to turn aside each Husky scoring bid.
With a lot of back and forth battle during the second half, and shots even at 4-4, Northeastern began to pepper Jones with shots in the final 15 minutes. NU then leveled the score 1-1 in the final seconds of regulation as Cox netted his first goal as a Husky.
It was all Northeastern during extra time as the Huskies outshot the Tribe 6-1, including a 2-0 advantage in shots on goal, but NU could not sneak another one past Jones, who made six saves in the match.
Northeastern will be back in action on Tuesday as the Huskies return home to host Holy Cross at 6 p.m. on Parsons Field.
