Late Goal Gives Warhawks Fifth Straight Win
Kevin Mesich (West Allis, Wis./West Allis Hale) scored his third goal of the season with less than ten minutes to go to break a 1-1 tie and lift the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Augustana Sunday evening at Thorson-Lucken Field in Rock Island, Illinois.
The win is the fifth in a row for the Warhawks, who are now 12-5-1. The Vikings drop to 5-12 this season.
A goal by the Vikings in the ninth minute meant the Warhawks would have to come from behind for the second time in their last three matches.
UW-W was up for the task as they were relentless on the attack. The Warhawks registered eight shots over the next 24 minutes until they finally tied the match with a goal by Brad Ludwig (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) in the 33rd minute. Hozai Ceballos (Janesville, Wis./Janesville Craig) assisted on the goal.
The Vikings made an attempt to take the lead nine minutes after halftime, but Toney Anderson (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) made the save for the Warhawks.
The Warhawks continued to pelt the Vikings with shots, registering nine more in the second half before scoring on their tenth. Mesich put one past the Augustana keeper in the 81st minute for his second game-winner of the season.
Augustana was unable to generate a quality opportunity the rest of the match.
Anderson recorded two saves in the match to earn his fifth win of the season.
UW-W will return to action Wednesday for their final regular season match when they host UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field in Whitewater.
