Late Goal Leads Post Over Dominican, 2-1
ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – Junior Terrell Whitting (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored his first goal of the season with 10 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Post University men’s soccer team a 2-1 road victory over Dominican on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Ani Lekaj (Sherman, Conn.) found senior Joe Baccielo (Stratford, Conn.) on a long throw. Baccielo booted it ahead to Whitting and the junior found the back of the net for the winning score.
“Terrell was fantastic today. He was phenomenal on the attack and worked very hard all game. I’m glad he put home the game-winner, he deserved it,” said head coach Ted Haley.
Dominican got on the board first in the 74th minute when Christopher Walsh found Luis DelPezo for a goal from 12-yards out to put the Chargers ahead 1-0.
Sophomore Francisco Sastre (Sao Paolo, Brazil) evened the score in the 86th minute. After a set piece, Dominican half-cleared the ball out of their zone. Sastre hit a side volley from 20-yards out through a slew of defenders for the score.
The Chargers (4-3, 2-1 CACC) outshot the Eagles 9-7 in the match, but Post held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Andre Lindsay (Clarendon, Jamaica) made three saves before leaving the game with an injury. Freshman Jon Hanlon (Centereach, N.Y.) played the final 19:07 in goal to pick up his first-career victory.
“They are a very good team and will be dangerous as the year goes on. I’m proud of our guys for the way they fought it out,” added Haley.
Post (5-1, 3-1 CACC) is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 29 at home against Holy Family. First touch is set for 3 p.m.
