Boiling Springs, N.C.  – Junior Alissa Jones scored in the 85^th minute to lift the Troy soccer team over Gardner-Webb 1-0 on Friday at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

The Trojans (4-2) had chances throughout the game but failed to convert until late in the match. Troy took 12 shots - five on goal - to Gardner-Webb’s three.

With time winding down, Jasmine Fahrnbauer played the ball into the box where Kirsten Rendall headed it to Jones, who beat her defender and lifted a shot over the goalkeeper for the game’s lone goal. The score was the 13^th of Jones’ career, moving her into a tie for eight all-time at Troy. It was also the fifth of the season for the Mustang, Okla., native and reigning Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

“We knew going into this match that they were a tough team to play against, especially on the road,” head coach Jason Hamilton said. “We knew it was going to be a battle, but I think our girls responded well and did what they needed to do to win the match.”

Troy’s four-game win streak and four-game shutout streak tie the longest in the program’s short history (Troy soccer began play in 1997). It was the second clean sheet of the season for freshman goalkeeper Mikki Lewis, who was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday.

With the loss, Gardner-Webb falls to 1-4 on the season.

After playing five matches in 15 days, the Trojans will get some well-deserved time off. Troy will rest for six days before hosting Jacksonville State on September 12. The match will be the first under the lights for the Troy soccer program. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
